This week, we move to Arizona to one of the spectacles of the golfing season. TPC Scottsdale Stadium course is the venue for the Waste Management Phoenix Open 2025. In recent years the tournament has found fame for the 16th hole. The par 3 has been surrounded by an amphitheatre of stands to create an atmosphere more resembling an NFL football game. The fans now cheers every shot which lands on the green and boo every shot that misses. In 2022 the crowd were whipped up into a frenzy when Sam Ryder had a hole in one and virtually every spectator launched their beer towards the hole. In the same tournament Mexican Carlos Ortiz (now plying his trade on the LIV tour with team Torque) also had a hole in one which sparked similar scenes. It is widely regarded that these events were the catalyst to what is now considered the most raucous party hole in golf. The spectators get there very early in the day and by the time the afternoon players hit the hole many of the viewers are quite the worse for wear with alcohol. In 2024 the event saw 54 arrests, 211 ejections, and 653 emergency calls made as a minority of fans’ drunken antics brought the event into disrepute, angering many of the tour’s senior players.

Nick Taylor won the tournament in a playoff against Charley Hoffman who has been sponsored by Waste Management for many years

Headline pick this week is: Sunjae Im Each way bet 22/1, US odds (outright) +2200

Off the tee and putting are the most relevant stats this week with course form also a significant advantage. Most of our picks are have these traits in their armoury. Luke Clanton, the top-ranked men’s amateur men’s golfer has accepted a sponsors exemption.Amateur golfers need 20 points to earn their PGA Tour card. Clanton will have 19 points at the start of play on Thursday. All he needs to do for his 20th point is make the cut.

Some difficult omissions from our picks this week were Andrew Novak, Frankie Caplan III and Sahith Theegala. Sahith, came so close to winning the tournament had it not been a adrenaline fuelled tee shot on the 71st hole of the tournament, derailing his chances and letting Scottie in 2022.
