We are well and truly into Major season now and the PGA Championship is upon us. Once again,
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy sit some way clear of the rest of the field, both in the world
ranking and in the market. Both appear to be close to their very best form and it’d be great to see
the two of them slugging it out on Sunday evening in a major – something we’ve not really seen
before despite Scheffler ultimately finishing on the heels of Rory in the Masters recently.
Much has been made of Rory’s affinity with this year’s venue, Quail Hollow. He’s a four-time winner
there (albeit not under major conditions when it last hosted the PGA in 2017) and with the Augusta
monkey off his back he can reasonably be expected to be playing with a freedom that we’ve not
seen for upwards of a decade.
Quail Hollow can be expected to pose a fierce test. Only 12 players finished under par in 2017 and -8
was enough for Justin Thomas to secure the title by a couple of shots. Although the Wells Fargo
(until recently played at Quail Hollow) occasionally saw winning scores in the mid-to-high teens
under par, the set up this week is likely to be tougher, in particular with longer rough than for
routine tour events.
As you would expect for a major championship, all aspects of the game will be severely tested, and
it’s hard to pick one particular element to be favoured. At 7600+ yards and playing as a par 71, it’s a
long enough test, although driving accuracy is very much on our list of pre-requisites for success
here.
