After the high of the Players, it didn’t take long for the reality of golf betting to bite, with the Valspar throwing up our most disappointing performance of the season so far. Of our five picks, only Ryo Hisatsune made the weekend, but despite threatening to break into the top 20, never looked like delivering a return for us. Viktor Hovland in particular was surprisingly poor, although in hindsight it was a tricky week to predict, with many players (including a bunch of the bigger names) struggling to get to grips with Copperhead. As ever, we must regroup quickly and dig into the data for the Texas Children’s Houston Open, where there are some strong trends to help us narrow down the list of potential winners.
Preview
There’s no getting away from the fact that the Valspar was disappointing, but we’re still nicely ahead for the month of March and feeling confident we can add to the profits as the Tour moves away from Florida for the Texas Children’s Houston Open.
Memorial Park has been the host course since 2020 and there has been a clear trend towards this being a ‘bomb and putt’ course. This is perhaps unsurprising since it weight in at almost 7500 yards with a par of just 70; in fact the total distance of first two par 4s on the card exceeds 1000 yards, making for one of the more brutal starts to be found all year. It clearly helps to pound it off the tee, with less of a premium on accuracy, since the rough is less punishing than at some of the Tour venues. Scottie Scheffler makes another appearance as he tries to regain his very best form in the run up to Augusta, but until showing signs of improvement, particularly with his iron play, he is easily swerved since the market has not sufficiently adjusted to his current level of performance.
Headline pick:
Min Woo Lee (6 units win +1500, 6 units top 5 +390)
