The FedEx playoffs are hotting up with just two events left in the season. Lucas Glover’s second win
on the bounce has propelled him into contention and incredibly he now sits hot on the heels of
Rahm, Scheffler and McIlroy. Cantlay and Homa also sit within 1000 points of the leader, and with
2000 on offer to this week’s winner, a big week could see any of these players hold the all-important
lead and handicap advantage on the rest of the field going into the Tour Championship next week.
Preview
Olympia Fields plays host to the BMW Championship for the second time. Jon Rahm was victorious
in 2020, holing a monster putt to beat Dustin Johnson in a thrilling playoff after DJ holed a monster
of his own on the final green to take the event into extra holes. We don’t have much Shotlink data
to work with and there was no strong pattern in 2020, although the smaller-than-average greens
meant that approach play and short game were perhaps a little more favoured than usual. It was
notable however that the course played tough. Fairly long for a par 70 at over 7300 yards, only 5
players broke par for the week – if that pattern holds up then it’ll be quite a change from recent
events where scores in the high teens to low 20s under par have been required. So it’s quite
possible that with the change of test we’ll see some different players towards the top of the
leaderboard compared to the last few weeks, as the grinders come to the fore.

Collin Morikawa’s (4pts each way, 25/1, 6 places) season has been a little disappointing overall, and
he currently sits in 22 nd place in the FedEx rankings, needing a decent week to fully secure his place
in the Tour Championship. His US Open and PGA performances are what draw the eye to his
chances here, showing that he can repeatedly play his way into contention when conditions are
really tough. Three top 15s in his last 5 starts show he’s in decent enough form and this switch away
from the putting contests of recent weeks could just see a little further improvement, in which case
his price could look big come the weekend.
Another guy who is building a solid record in tough conditions is Viktor Hovland (4pts each way,
18/1, 6 places). We were on the likeable Norwegian last week but having put himself up there with
a chance going into the final round, he holed absolutely nothing over his final dozen holes and
agonisingly finished a shot out of the places. His short game continues to show improvement
(positive strokes gained around the green over the last 3 months) and he should be fully motivated
since a win here would either see him either leading or very close to leading the FexEx standings
going into the season finale.
Tom Kim (2.5pts each way, 35/1, 6 places) was returning from the ankle injury he picked up at The
Open last week and after a strong start it perhaps wasn’t surprising that he faded a little over the
weekend into a tie for 24 th place. With the distinct possibility of further improvement as his ankle
continues to heal and his consecutive top 10s at the Scottish Open and The Open still fresh in the
memory, he looks to be decent value to put in another big performance this week provided he didn’t
do himself any damage last week. Lack of distance may be a slight issue given that the two par 5s
here will only be reachable for the longer hitters, but his approach accuracy will always stand him in
good stead on tough tracks like this and he’s found some improvement on the greens over the last
few months.
One player who looks a bit under-rated in the market based on recent form, is Keegan Bradley
(1.5pts each way, 70/1, 6 places). 11 th in the FedEx standings, he will know that a good week will put
him in position to have a crack at the jackpot in the Tour Championship, and it’s only a few weeks
since he picked up his last Tour win at the Travelers. In a field of only 50, he could easily break the
top 10 at the very least and has the class when on top form to beat even a line-up of this quality.
Finally we’ll have a small play on Adam Schenk (1pt each way, 125/1, 6 places), who we’ve written
about before as still not having received the credit he deserves for his results this season. He
currently sits 20 th on the FedEx list, ahead of some much bigger names, yet lies well down the market
here. Three top 10s in his last 5 outings show that his form hasn’t exactly tailed off towards the back
end of the season and he is the most interesting of the outsiders to get involved with here.
Other Recommendations
As you would expect for this stage of the playoffs it’s hard to rule any of this field out with a great
degree of confidence and few names would be a genuine surprise to see on the first page of the
leaderboard. It’s interesting that Scottie Scheffler is behind Rory in the market, with the test at
Olympia Fields arguably likely to suit his game a little better. With Rahm’s form seemingly having
tailed off a touch, Scottie is probably the best value of the big three this week. Cantlay sits just
behind them as he goes for a third consecutive win in this event on the back of a big performance in
the St Jude, but it’s worth noting that neither of his BMW wins were secured at this venue, so he
feels a little short on that basis. Xander Schauffele was seriously considered as a guy who is well
overdue a huge week and ought to be suited by this test. Tommy Fleetwood is playing about as well
and consistently as anyone on Tour and will likely play his way into the tournament yet again, but
vulnerability on Sunday feels like it’s starting to become an issue. Grillo, Todd, Cole and Poston
continue to play some consistently good stuff and those looking to add an outsider could do worse
than any of those guys.
For US place bets we suggest the following:
Collin Morikawa Top 5 +450
Viktor Hovland Top 5 +340
Tom Kim Top 5 +850
Keegan Bradley Top10 +410
Adam Schenk Top10 +750
